Teams around the league have until October 31 to work out extensions with players selected in 2011 NBA Draft. Notable players like
‘ point guard Kyrie Irving and
‘ power forward Kenneth Faried have already worked out deals.
Earlier in the week, the Orlando Magic worked out a four-year deal worth about $53 million with center Nikola Vucevic. The made their center a priority because a good center, especially one that is a double-double machine like Nikola Vucevic, is so hard to come by in today’s NBA. They have another promising player in the same situation – forward Tobias Harris.
According to a report form Chris Broussard of ESPN.com, Tobias Harris won’t be inking a contract extension with the Magic before the October 31 deadline. Broussard notes that Tobias Harris’ deal with Nike gives him an upgrade if he winds up with the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers or Chicago Bulls.
Of course, even if Tobias Harris would like to get a boost in his Nike deal, it would be difficult to get to one of those destinations. If he doesn’t sign an extension, he will become a restricted free agent and this summer’s situations with the Detroit Pistons and big man Greg Monroe and the Phoenix Suns and Eric Bledsoe, it is quite difficult to make your way to another team. He could go the Monroe route and sign a qualifying offer next year but that seems unlikely.
Tobias Harris has continued to maintain he wants to remain with the Magic and they have done the same. Plus, his cousin, big man Channing Frye, joined the team this year.
Tobias Harris averaged 14.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 46.4% from the field, 25.4% from beyond the arc and 80.7% from the foul line last season.
