Staubach told the Charlotte Business Journal that the outrage over the Redskins name should be reason enough to change it.
"If that name is derogatory to the Indian nation, I say get rid of it. I’ve never looked at it that way. I’ve never looked at it like the N-word. I guess there’s certain Indian nations that are against it and some that are for it. If the Indian nation decides that, “Hey, we think this is a derogatory word,” then you probably have to get rid of it. I don’t think there’s enough people that have stepped forward to want to do that."
NFL fans have long been calling for the Redskins to change their name, believing it to be offensive to Native Americans.
However, the Redskins owner Dan Snyder has insisted a name change will not occur. Given that, Staubach’s words likely won’t result in any immediate changes, but his is just another voice that puts pressure on the Redskins to re-think their stance.
A 10th round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 1964, Staubach carved out an illustrious 11-year career. Staubach won two Super Bowls, an MVP and was named to five Pro Bowls throughout his time in the NFL.
