Ryan Mallett is ready for the chance to play if the Houston Texans decide to replacing struggling starting QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett said he would be ready if coach Bill O’Brien decides to replace starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.

“If it happens, it happens,” Mallett said, via the Houston Chronicle. “I’ll be ready. I’ll be prepared. I prepare like I’m the starter. I have since I’ve been in the NFL. I’ve just got to continue to do that and be ready when my number’s called.”

Mallett does have the fans behind him, as a Chronicle poll has him up an overwhelming 87-13 over Fitzpatrick as to whom Texans supporters would like to see under center.

Mallett has played in just five regular season games, having thrown only four passes. He made his Texans debut in a mop-up role during Houston’s week two win at Oakland.

Having been traded from the Patriots to the Texans during the summer, Mallett has been putting in more work in the event Fitzpatrick is yanked. O’Brien credited Mallett for the increased effort earlier this week, yet there is little indication the third-year veteran will see the field entering Sunday’s game at the Titans.

Fitzpatrick is 22nd among quarterbacks with an 88.2 passer rating, having thrown eight touchdowns but also seven interceptions along with four fumbles. He has averaged just 218.6 yards per game, placing him 26th in the league.

Houston has lost three straight games, falling to 3-4 overall while also placing them two games behind the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts.
