The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t come close to living up to the expectations that were set for them this season, but one consistent player has been star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. He has been the heart and soul of the Buccaneers’ defense and they rewarded him with a seven-year contract extension that is worth close to $100 million, according to Jay Glazer.
Needless to say, this move is a big one and was a needed move for the Buccaneers to make. McCoy is the leader of their defense, and at just 26 years of age has plenty of time left to dominant opposing offensive lines. Obviously this deal is extremely expensive, but it’s well worth it and a fair deal for both sides.
So far this season, McCoy has recorded 17 tackles and 2.0 sacks and hasn’t quite played up to expectations himself. With that being said, he has played hard and has been one of the only consistent players each and every week. Tampa Bay needs to keep their talent intact in order to break out of this recent funk that their franchise has been in, and McCoy is a cornerstone piece of their defense.
Throughout his four-year and five game NFL career, McCoy has piled up 20.5 sacks, 104 tackles, three forced fumbles, and 11 passes defensed. Those numbers show just how valuable has been to the Tampa Bay franchise.
This was a good move and one of the more talented defensive tackles will be locked up in Tampa Bay long-term.
