Although several players who were part of the class of 2011 have reached contract extensions with their teams, including
‘ point guard Kyrie Irving,
‘ power forward Kenneth Faried and
center Nikola Vucevic, the Golden State Warriors and guard Klay Thompson aren’t close to a deal.
“Thompson is seeking a maximum deal paying upward of $15 million per season, a source said,” reports Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports. “The Warriors have improved their offer to get in the vicinity but have not offered a full maximum contract, sources said.”
Spears goes on to say that owner Joe Lacob “has yet to become comfortable” offering a max contract and that Klay Thompson believes an offer of less than max money would be “absurd.”
The Warriors have backed themselves into a bit of a corner seeing as how they reportedly would not give up Klay Thompson in a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves that reportedly would have netted them star power forward Kevin Love. They have clearly already placed a great deal of value on Klay Thompson and he and his camp simply wanted to be paid that way.
If the two sides can’t come to terms, Klay Thompson will become a restricted free agent in 2015 and will certainly be deemed worthy of a max contract by at least one team.
Last season, Klay Thompson averaged 18.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.4% from the field, 41.7% from three and 79.5% from the foul line. In his career, he has averaged 16.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the floor, 41.0% from three and 82.7% from the charity stripe in his career.
