The 2013-2014

NBA

season was a nightmare for the Los Angeles Lakers.

They lost center Dwight Howard to the Houston Rockets in free agency and then were decimated by injuries, including injuries that cost guards Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash mot of their seasons.

Although the Lakers lost big man Pau Gasol to the Chicago Bulls, the Lakers feel a few of their additions – point guard Jeremy Lin, power forward Carlos Boozer and and big man Ed Davis – and the return of both Bryant and Nash could help them show great improvement.

However, that plan is already out the window. Nash will miss the season with a back injury that will likely force him to retire.

According to Bill Oram of The Orange County Register, Lakers’ general manager Mitch Kupchak talked to Nash’s agent, Bill Duffy, to finalize his “decision to step away.” Kupchak was also asked about signing a guard to replace Nash but was non-committal, simply saying “I don’t know.”

There Lakers will apply and may get the Disabled Player’s Exception, which would give them a chance to sign a player potentially worth more than the minimum salary. Of course, it is slim pickings in free agency at the moment.
