Kentucky threw everything the Wildcats could against top-ranked Mississippi State, closing within a touchdown three times in the second half, but linebacker (yes, linebacker) Christian Holmes’ 61-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on an onsides kick attempt with 2:31 remaining finally sealed the deal for the Bulldogs, who were able to leave Lexington with a 45-31 win that improved their record to 7-0.

The Bulldogs also needed every one of Josh Robinson’s 198 yards to subdue the Wildcats (5-2), including his 73-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that gave Mississippi State a 38-24 lead, but Kentucky closed to within seven when quarterback Patrick Towles rushed for a 4-yard score to make it 38-31 with with 2:41 left.

Kentucky kicked off at midfield following a personal foul penalty against Mississippi State, but Austin McGinnis’ onside attempt bounced into the hands of Holmes, who sprinted down the sideline for the game-clinching score.

Heisman candidate Dak Prescott was held to just 216 yards and a touchdown passing, yet was able to add two rushing scores while rushing for 88 yards on 19 carries.

Towles completed 24 of 43 attempts for 390 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 76 yards and a pair of scores, but was harassed by the Mississippi State pass rush, which recorded seven sacks.

The Bulldogs defense gave up 504 yards, but their third down defense (5 of 14) helped hold off the Wildcats.
