Tom Brady completed 30-of-35 passes for 354 yards and five touchdowns, including three to Rob Gronkowski, who made nine catches for 149 yards, to lead the New England Patriots to a 51-23 blowout victory of the Chicago Bears.
Jay Cutler completed 20-of-30 passes for 277 yards with three touchdowns and an interception but he riled piled up the stats after the game was no longer in doubt – the Patriots had a 45-7 lead early in the third quarter.
After forcing the Bears to punt on their opening drive, the Patriots quickly got on the board. They went 55 yards in five plays capped by a six-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Gronkowski.
The Bears were then forced to punt again and the Patriots got to the one-yard line but a false star penalty forced them to kick a field goal to extend the lead to 10-0. Four plays later, the Patriots had the ball back. A one-yard touchdown toss from Brady to Tim Wright made it 17-0 Patriots.
The Bears finally answered with an impressive five-play, 77-yard drive that ended in 25-yard touchdown pass from Cutler to Matt Forte that cut the lead to 17-7. It only took the Patriots 3:40 to march 80 yards and extend the margin back to 17. Brady found Gronkowski again to make it 24-7, which is when the Patriots began to run away with it.
After another stop, Brady hit Brandon LaFell, who is becoming one of his favorite targets, for a nine-yard touchdown. On the next play after the kick-off, Cutler was sacked by Zach Moore and Dont’a Hightower. He fumbled and Rob Ninkovich returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. Darrelle Revis ended the half with an interception and the Patriots took a 38-7 lead into the break.
They then took the opening drive of the second half and marched 80 yards on six plays. Brady found Gronkowski for the third time, this time from 46 yards out. Gronkowski broke several tackles on his way to the end zone to make it 45-7, which is when the Patriots called off the dogs.
Cutler added touchdown passes to Martellus Bennett (who made an absolutely beautiful catch on a play he was interfered with) and Alshon Jeffrey (and two point conversions on each) with a Stephenson Gostkowski field goal sandwiched in between. Another field by Gostkowski made it 51-23.
The Bears will enjoy a bye next week before hitting the road to take on the rival Green Bay Packers on November 9. The Patriots have a showdown with Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos Sunday.
