After trading swingman Paul Pierce and big man Kevin Garnett to the
last season the Boston Celtics finished with a record of 25-57, the fifth-worst mark in the league.
That led to them selecting point guard Marcus Smart with the sixth-overall pick and swingman James Young with the 17th-overall pick (from the Nets).
However, that could mean the Celtics are in for another long year. Most expect the Celtics to deal point guard Rajon Rondo, a former All-Star, at some point before the deadline. Thar way they could let Smart play and develop.
Most expect the Celtics will then be players in the 2016 offseason but could even make a big move in 2015.
“As far as free agency the Celtics have mentioned a need for a big man to anchor the paint at the center position for some time now so it would not surprise me to see them go after someone like Marc Gasol, DeAndre Jordan, or Roy Hibbert if he finds his game on a contract year,” explained E.J. Ayala of Basketball Insiders. “In regards to franchise players in next year’s draft it’s too early to tell. I do believe there is a lot of talent near the top of the draft but let’s see how these guys do in their first year of college and see if the hype for some of the players rings true once the face a better quality of competition.”
Those are lofty goal with Hibbert potentially being the most attainable. The others don’t seem all that realistic unless Rondo is still a member of the team and a player is interested in teaming up with him.
