The Dallas Mavericks went after the biggest names in free agents, and while they failed to sign a superstar like Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James, they signed a young Chandler Parsons away from the Houston Rockets with a bunch of potential.
Parsons got a big contract to stay with the Mavericks, and he will be a second-scoring option that can help take some of the burden off of Dirk Nowtizki’s shoulders. Nowitzki has been the undisputed leader of the Mavericks, winning an MVP award and leading them to the 2011 NBA Championship over the Miami Heat.
This is clearly still Dirk’s team, but Parsons is excited about the team and following in Nowitzki’s footsteps as the face of the organization whenever Nowitzki decides to hang it up.
“I want to be here for a long time,” says Parsons, via the Dallas Morning News. “That’s the reason I came here. I wanted a bigger role. I wanted more leadership.
“The goal is to win, and win big. With the core here, we have the potential to be really good. And I obviously see myself as a big part of that. I hope Dirk plays for 10 more years. But when he does go, hopefully I’ll be here and can fill those big ol’ shoes that he has.”
