Veteran point guard J.J. Barea helped the Dallas Mavericks defeat the

Miami Heat

to win the 2011 NBA Finals. Although he was a big part of their team, the Mavericks decided to break up that title team to keep their financial flexibility for the future.

J.J. Barea cashed in on his success, inking a four-year, $18 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Timberwolves are looking to extend point guard Ricky Rubio and brought in veteran Mo Williams in the offseason. They have tried to trade J.J. Barea but haven’t found a taker for him. Instead, it looks like they will waive Barea.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, the Timberwolves are finalizing a buyout with J.J. Barea and will be waived before Monday’s 5:00 pm EST deadline. If he clears waivers, he hoped to return to the Mavericks.

The Mavericks gave up Jose Calderon, a more-than-solid point guard in order to deal for New York Knicks‘ center Tyson Chandler. However, they have plenty of options. Raymond Felton came back in that deal and the Mavericks re-signed Devin Harris. They also signed veteran Jameer Nelson so J.J. Barea would be adding to an already crowded back court.

J.J. Barea averaged 8.4 points, 3.8 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game while shooting 38.7% from the field, 34.7% from beyond the arc and 79.0% from the free throw line last season.
