The Packers quickly got on the board thanks to a 70-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to receiver Randall Cobb with 11:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
But the Saints responded on their very next drive and scored on a 4-yard rush from receiver Brandin Cooks to make it 7-7.
Cooks’ touchdown marked the final trip to the endzone for either team in the first half. Three field goals from Green Bay’s Mason Crosby and two from New Orleans’ Shayne Graham sent the Packers into the break up 16-13.
However, the Saints got on a roll once the second half began. Quarterback Drew Brees threw touchdown passes to Cooks (50 yards) and tight end Jimmy Graham (22 yards) to give New Orleans a 30-16 lead entering the fourth.
Brees extended the Saints’ lead to 37-16 with 9:56 remaining in the game with a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Josh Hill. Rodgers added a 14-yard rushing score to make it a two-possession game with 5:07 remaining, but New Orleans recovered the ensuing onside kick and soon made it 44-23 as a result of a 21-yard rush from Mark Ingram.
Brees finished the game 27-32 for 311 yards and three touchdowns. Ingram was New Orleans’ top rusher with 172 yards and Cooks added 94 receiving yards in the game.
On the other side, Rodgers was 28-39 for 418 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Running back Eddie Lacy posted 59 rushing yards and Cobb had 126 receiving yards.
The Saints move to 3-4 and put themselves in prime position to make a run at an NFC South title. Green Bay remains one of the NFC’s top teams 5-3, but surely this loss will sting.
