Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals failed the concussion protocol and was unable to return to his team’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles on week 8 of the NFL schedule.

The Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles both stood to lose key players during their week 8 showdown on Sunday after an ugly collision that included Patrick Peterson and Jeremy Maclin.

Both players appeared to be at risk for a concussion, and so both left the sidelines and were subjected to the league’s concussion protocol. In a development that I suppose validates the fact that each team has doctors conducting independent evaluations of players going through the protocol, one player was able to return to the game and one was not.

Maclin returned and had a huge impact for the Eagles in the loss, while Peterson did not return.

That means Peterson will have to clear the league protocol this week before being deemed eligible to return to action. The Eagles will surely keep an eye on Maclin as well, but it seems likely they can proceed with the assumption that he will be available.

Peterson and the Cardinals are now 6-1 on the season and sitting in first place in the NFC West. They will hope that this concussion does not keep their top corner out for an extended period of time.
