North Carolina mens basketball coach Roy Williams spoke out for the first time this weekend on reports of academic fraud at the school.

Since a report detailing what some have called the worst academic fraud case in NCAA history was released, Roy Williams has finally spoken publicly for the first time since the report has tarnished North Carolina’s reputation.

“We made some mistakes for a long time,” Williams said after a 111-58 win over Fayetteville State in UNC’s first exhibition of the season on Friday. “It’s a very sad time for us.”

The independent report released Wednesday, said that academic fraud that went on for nearly two decades involved more than 1,500 athletes, including 10 members of the UNC team that won the 2005 national championship, according to CBS Sports.

“I didn’t like that we had so many guys in the same major,” Williams said thinking back tot he 2004-2005 season. “I didn’t think it made sense.”

Roy Williams was not implicated in the report that was made. He said that he tried to make some changes with his players and academics after the 2004-2005 season and problems that seemed to arise.

Now, the University of North Carolina waits to see if the NCAA finds enough evidence to strip the team of their 2004-2005 championship season that included players like Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants, Marvin Williams and Sean May.

Williams thinks that North Carolina should keep the title season.

“Nobody knows what’s going to happen with the NCAA,” Williams said when asked if he’s worried the 2005 title might be vacated. “But I feel strongly we did things the right way.”
