The Cleveland Cavaliers are doing their best to ensure Anderson Varejao remains with the team for years to come.
The Cavaliers are having “serious” discussions with Varejao about a contract extension, according to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.
"Talks have progressed in recent weeks, but there’s no agreement imminent, sources said.Varejao, 32, could become an unrestricted free agent in July 2015. Nevertheless, he and Cavaliers officials have a mutual desire to reach an agreement in the near future and continue a 10-year partnership."
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Cavaliers are interested in keeping Varejao. Not only has he been with the franchise for the entirety of his NBA career, he’s a beloved teammate of star LeBron James. LeBron and Varejao were teammates in Cleveland from 2004-2010.
LeBron recently spoke to ESPN about being reunited with Varejao.
"Reflecting on his relationship with Varejao, with whom he teamed to reach the 2007 Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, James said it has been “like riding a bike” to be around him again.“If you’ve seen some of the preseason games we played in, it’s like we never missed a beat,” James said."
Blatt also admitted to ESPN that James’ history with Varejao played a role in the 32-year-old winning the Cavaliers’ starting center job.
Varejao averaged 8.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game this past season.
