Golden State Warriors To Extend Klay Thompson Before Deadline?

The Golden State Warriors need to extend Klay Thompson and the likelihood he gets a max contract is almost certain. The question is when will he get it?

Klay Thompson was untradeable when the Minnesota Timberwolves called up offering Kevin Love and he was unavailable every time they called. Now that Love is in Cleveland, the Golden State Warriors are committed to their Splash Brother and need to give him the max contract he has coming to him.

It’s basically assumed that Klay Thompson will get a max deal but the question is when will the Dubs make the formal offer?

According to Steve Kyler from Basketball Insiders, the Golden State Warriors will more than likely find a way to extend Klay Thompson before the deadline on Friday, but max contracts now are always risky prospects.

"The problem with early extensions for teams is you are bidding against yourself. Why give Klay MAX now… wait until next summer and see if the market says he;s a MAX player, if they do then you match it and get the lower annual raises.The only reason to do a deal today, is if you as a player feel like that is your market or as a team if you feel like the player will get more later.I think the Warriors and Klay reach a deal before Friday’s deadline. I can’t see them letting this story hang over their season for a guy they want to keep."

The bottom line is that Klay Thompson is going to max contract but there is no reason to give it to him now. His value is at the max level, and it can only go down. The chances of that happening aren’t very high, but the Dubs are more likely to get a deal done just so it’s done more so than anything else.
