New York Knicks fans weren’t happy the team kept J.R. Smith’s brother, Chris Smith, on the active roster for part of last season, but the younger Smith will enter the NBA D-League draft in the hopes of making a career for himself.

Former New York Knick Chris Smith is entering the NBA D-League draft, and hopes to earn his chance at an NBA career. Chris Smith is the younger brother of Knicks shooting guard J.R. Smith, and the team admitted one of the major factors in keeping Chris on the roster for part of last season was to appease his older brother.

Chris Smith played in only two games for the Knicks, who eventually sent him to their D-League affiliate, the Erie BayHawks, but Erie released him in March. He joined the Dallas Mavericks Summer League team, but was released before the team even played. He’s entering the D-League draft in the hopes of getting a fresh start somewhere without the baggage of being “J.R. Smith’s brother.”
“Every time that something happened, it comes out that Chris Smith is not that good,” Chris Smith said. “Maybe I am good, maybe it just wasn’t my time. I’m a very humble guy, every situation humbles me. The next opportunity, I’m going to take full advantage of it.”
Chris Smith might not know the exact meaning of ‘humble,’ but it seems clear he’s willing to work his way from the bottom to the top.
