Michael Vick relieved Geno Smith in the New York Jets loss on Sunday and will be the team’s starter for this week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs

The New York Jets will have a new starting quarterback as they begin the second half of their season with a 1-8 record and are moving on from Geno Smith in favor of Michael Vick who is starting against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Head coach Rex Ryan made the announcement at his Monday afternoon press conference and delivered the news that had been expected after Vick replaced Smith on Sunday and gave the team a little bit of a spark, although in a losing effort as the Jets fell to 1-7 on the year.

The former No. 1 overall pick will not make his first start of the season against Andy Reid who helped resurrect his career with the Philadelphia Eagles when he was released from prison.

Vick gets the start after Smith went 2-of-8 passing with five yards and three interceptions in the first quarter in the loss to the Buffalo Bills, but Rex Ryan said it is not guaranteed that Vick will be starting for the rest of the season or even beyond this game.

The Jets hitched their future to the success of Smith who was taken in the second round out of West Virginia in the 2013 NFL Draft but has thrown 19 career touchdowns to 31 interceptions while completing 55.9 percent of his passes for a 66.2 quarterback rating.
