After New York Jets coach Rex Ryan broke the news to Geno Smith that he lost the starting quarterback job, Smith didn’t have much to say.

After getting dominated in a 43-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills Sunday, the New York Jets had no choice but to make some changes. The obvious change was at quarterback. After Smith started the game by throwing three interceptions in his first eight passes, Rex Ryan benched the second-year quarterback for veteran Michael Vick.

Vick didn’t play much better, but he wasn’t a complete dumpster fire either. That counts for something, at least for the Jets.

When Smith talked about the news to reporters, it seemed like he didn’t care. Via Michael David Smith, for ProFootballTalk.com.

"Asked by a reporter today what his reaction was to learning that Michael Vick is now the starter, Smith answered, “There was none. I just went on with my day.”"

Smith said, however, that he’s more frustrated with his performance than being benched.

"“I’m obviously frustrated because it happened,” Smith said. “You never want that to happen. I wouldn’t use the word frustrated. I think I’m just more disappointed obviously because we lost and then to turn around and get the news. You’ve got to move on and be professional about it. I’m always going to be here for my teammates and in support of Mike and everyone. That’s basically how I’m looking at it, finding ways to get better and helping this team any way I can.”"

Smith has a lot of work to do to “get better” and right now he’s helping the team by not playing. Sounds harsh, but it’s true. Vick isn’t much of an upgrade at this point though, and the Jets will likely bounce between quarterbacks a few times this season. Don’t expect this to be the last we see of Geno.
