Earlier this month, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center in Little Falls, NJ, reported that several items were stolen from the museum, including several of the catcher’s World Series championship rings and two MVP plaques. It appears that while efforts to recover the stolen memorabilia have been unsuccessful, the museum will be getting replacements, courtesy of MLB, and Berra’s two former teams: the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
The Museum’s Board of Trustees posted the following announcement on their Facebook page:
"On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center, we are pleased to announce that Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig and Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets are graciously donating exact replicas of the items recently taken from the Museum. In addition, they also are donating several new items to our existing collection, ensuring that the Museum will be an even better place for fans to visit in honor of Yogi’s legacy. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Commissioner Selig and Major League Baseball, the Yankees and the Mets for their generosity, as well as to all of the fans and friends of the Museum for their concern and support during this difficult time."
Sounds like it’s as good as it could be for the museum without getting the originals back. Classy move by the Yankees, Mets and MLB. Berra, 89, gave a thumbs up upon hearing the news, according to his granddaughter, Lindsay, who expressed her gratitude on Twitter:
