The New York Jets reportedly won’t start QB Geno Smith unless coach Rex Ryan pressured by management to do so.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets will likely not start second-year quarterback Geno Smith in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs after Smith’s ghastly Week 8 performance, which saw him throw three interceptions to the Buffalo Bills in the team’s 43-23 loss. If that’s the case, the team would presumably turn to veteran Michael Vick, who hardly did any better against Buffalo.

Aside from the obvious failures in his performance, Mehta reports that Smith has lost the locker room, making it tougher for him to hold his claim to the starter’s spot even as he plays in only his second NFL season.

Despite his short tenure in the league and the requisite patience needed with a young QB, Geno Smith simply can’t continue as the starter in New York. While he has shown flashes of brilliance, the turnovers are becoming a disturbing trend. He has seven touchdown passes to ten interceptions and three lost fumbles in 2014. A team can hardly sustain success when their quarterback gives away the ball nearly twice as often as he does throw a TD pass.

Additionally, Smith has no success to speak of in the winning column this year. Outside of their Week 1 victory of the equally hapless Oakland Raiders, the Jets have lost all of their games to fall to 1-7. While Michael Vick showed little upside in giving the ball away three more times to Buffalo, his steady hand could be just what the Jets need as they seek respectability this season.
