The Boston Red Sox traded for Yoenis Cespdes at the MLB trade deadline, but now they may be looking to move on over the offseason.

The Boston Red Sox pulled off one of the biggest blockbuster trade deadline deals that Major League Baseball has seen in a long time. At the center of it was Jon Lester being sent to the Oakland Athletics and Yoenis Cespedes heading to Boston. Now however, the honeymoon looks to be coming to a very quick halt.

More from Boston Red Sox

Cepsedes was initially expected to sign a long term extension with the Red Sox. Boston was prepared to offer an Adam Katz client a fair extension. Unfortunately though, Cespedes has since fired Katz and moved on to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Agency. As was the case with Robinson Cano, Roc Nation will be seeking a much larger deal for Cespedes, and this likely puts the Red Sox in a position where they no longer feel comfortable making an offer.

With that in mind, Boston is said to be looking to trade the slugger. He is under contract for next season, and then becomes a free agent going forward. The Red Sox will have a very obvious trade partner however.

Enter Mets GM Sandy Alderson. The Mets have a glaring need in the outfield, and they are already being linked to Colorado Rockies slugger Michael Cuddyer. While Cuddyer is a significantly better hitter in the average department, Cespedes has unrivaled power.

The Mets are once again moving in the fences this offseason, and are looking for pop in their lineup. Despite being the Yankees little brother, the Mets spend their fair share of money as well.

New York should definitely approach the situation with caution however. In a story by the NY Daily News, a Red Sox Insider talked of Cespedes saying “He marches to his own drum and the coaches all hate him.’

With Boston knowing they are no longer trying to retain the outfielder, they will likely be looking for the best trade package possible. After giving up Lester to acquire him however, don’t expect Boston to get fleeced.
