The first year at Texas hasn’t gone swimmingly for Charlie Strong but athletic director Steve Patterson believes the first-year head coach is doing a great job
Charlie Strong is 3-5 after eight games in his first season as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns and is coming off a 23-0 shutout to the Kansas State Wildcats as the Longhorns were shutout for the first time since the 2004 season, but athletic director Steve Patterson believes Strong and his staff have done a great job.

Strong wasn’t the first choice to replace the Mack Brown and the vote of confidence he received on Monday won’t do anything to lessen the pressure he faces on a daily basis as he attempts to rebuild Texas to the status their fans are accustomed to, but it was a plea for patience in a rebuilding year.
Texas AD Patterson about Strong, "The expectation was it was a rebuilding year. ...At the end of the day Charlie and staff doing great job."

How Patterson measures success is not how most judge the success of a football coach because at 3-5 and 2-3 in the Big 12 would be anything but a great job. The offense ranks No. 110 in scoring offense, No. 87 in passing offense and No. 97 in rushing offense and quarterback Tyrone Swoopes has five touchdowns and four interceptions in conference play.
Strong had to change the culture when he took over and dismissed a number of players who aren’t buying into his system and buying what he is selling at Texas, so Patterson is looking at finding as many positives he can in an otherwise lackluster season that could see Texas missing a bowl game if they don’t win three of their four final games, which includes home games vs West Virginia and TCU.
