The news came a few hours after Michael Jordan stated his desire to lock up his young point guard before the Friday deadline to come to an extension.
“I’d much rather get Kemba done before the season starts,” Jordan told CBSSports.com. “Ultimately that’s what I intend to accomplish. We’re in real conversations. I’m hopeful. Really hopeful.”
If the Hornets weren’t able to get a deal done, Walker would have become a free agent at end of the season. Walker didn’t take the leap many wanted him to take last season, but at 24 he still has plenty of time to do it. His numbers still improved, averaging 17.7 points and a career-high 6.1 assists per game. The knock against him was that his shooting efficiency numbers fell compared to two years ago.
Walker is a key part of Charlotte’s rebuild. The Hornets were right to re-sign him, even if he’s plateaued (and I don’t think he has). Even if they wanted to add a better point guard in free agency, Charlotte isn’t a top NBA destination and will have a hard time convincing a point guard better than Walker to sign. The young pieces are in place for Steve Clifford and Jordan to work with. Now we are just waiting on them to develop.
