Former Washington Redskins linebacker and NFL analyst London Fletcher said that Jay Gruden has been too wishy-washy in handling the quarterback situation.

London Fletcher made comments before Monday night’s match up between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins that Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has been too “wishy-washy” in dealing with the quarterback situation.

Fletcher, who works as an analyst for That Other Pregame Show on CBS Sports Network, made his comments saying that Kirk Cousins should continue to start in the absence of Robert Griffin III who is out with an ankle injury. Jay Gruden made the decision last week to give third string quarterback Colt McCoy a chance after Cousins was struggling against the Tennessee Titans. McCoy came in and helped the Redskins come back and win, leading to Gruden’s decision to start him Monday night.

London Fletcher said that Jay Gruden flip flops too much as a head coach.

"“For you as a backup quarterback, your mindset, the preparation is totally different, so Colt has had all week, plus an extra day, in understanding that I’m going to be the starter. Now he has more things to worry about going into this game. He’s concerned about these blitzes, this coverage, getting the ball to his playmakers and things like that.”"
"“And not only that, [Jay Gruden] flip flops too much as a head coach,” Fletcher said. “One week, when Kirk came in and had his success, they asked him, was Robert going to get his job back. [Gruden said] we don’t know, we’ll see, because Kirk had done some good things. Now Kirk starts to throw a few interceptions, he benches him and brings Colt McCoy in.”"

Cousins threw nine interceptions against ten touchdowns in five-plus games after replacing Griffin when he injured his ankle in Week 2. The Redskins lost all four of his starts before last Sunday, when they defeated the Tennessee Titans 19-17 after Cousins was replaced with McCoy, who went 12-for-13, 128 yards and a touchdown.

On Monday night, Colt McCoy got the win for the Washington Redskins over one of, if not the best team in football when they defeated the Dallas Cowboys 20-17 in overtime. McCoy continued his impressive completion percentage as he went 25-for-30, 299 yards and an interception. McCoy did have a rushing touchdown in the low scoring affair.

Maybe Jay Gruden’s “wishy-washy” attitude is just what the Redskins need. They’ve won two in a row and advance to 3-5 on the year. They’ll take on Minnesota next week.
