The Los Angeles Angels plan to pick up the $7-million team option on closer Huston Street for the 2015 MLB season.

Here’s a decision we can likely file under “duh:” the Los Angeles Angels plan to pick up the team option on closer Huston Street for the 2015 season:

This is likely a no-brainer regardless of the team, as Street has been an excellent pitcher for nearly his entire career, and 2014 was no different, despite a couple smaller injuries, so $7 million isn’t a whole lot to pay for a high-leverage reliever, and if you put stock in such things, Street was an all-star in 2014. The Angels certainly aren’t hurting for money, at least not at the point where they’d turn away a good player asking for a mere one-year deal under $10 million, and if Street under-performs or loses time due to injury, the Angels can simply cut him.

Los Angeles would almost assuredly be paying more for a lesser pitcher in free agency, so this makes sense even before it’s considered that the Angels traded for Street in July, offering up four middling prospects to the San Deigo Padres for him, a deal that cut into the Halo’s already-thin minor-league depth than anything else. Two of the players traded for Street were pitchers themselves, including right-hander R.J. Alvarez, so keeping Street was likely factored into this trade when it was made, as the Halos don’t have a lot of capable replacements waiting in the minors.
