The Milwaukee Bucks are clearly moving in a new direction.
They hired Jason Kidd away from the Brooklyn Nets to help take the team in that direction. They will be building around the No.2 overall pick, Jabari Parker and have other solid, young pierces like swingman Giannis Antetokounmpo and big man Larry Sanders.
They do have a few pieces that don’t seem to fit and John Zitzler of Basketball Insiders believes guard O.J. Mayo be one of them.
“There have been massive changes throughout the Bucks organization since Mayo joined the team,” Zitzler explained. “As a result, the direction of the franchise has changed. Mayo doesn’t appear to be the long-term answer at shooting guard for the rebuilding Bucks. The problem will be finding a team willing to take his hefty contract. Mayo can be very effective shooting the three ball, but struggles to do so on a consistent basis. If he can prove early on this season that he can knock down perimeter shots with regularity, he may catch the eye of a contender looking to add shooting.”
Trading Mayo certainly would make sense but he is set to make $8 million in the 2014-2015 season and $8 million a year later. That’s a hefty price to pay for a player that doesn’t have the greatest reputation at the moment.
O.J. Mayo put up 11.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 40.7% from the field, 37.0% from three and and 86.4% from the charity stripe last season. In six years as a pro, he has up 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 43.3% from the floor, 38.0% from three and 82.1% from the free throw line.
