The forward underwent spinal surgery this summer, but had been healthy up until the stroke- now, he is extremely weak on the right side of his body, and is having difficulty speaking. He knows who he is, where he is, and who those are around him, but he’s physically in some not-great shape.
The hockey legend most famously played for the Detroit Red Wings, although he also spent time skating with the Houston Aeros and the New England Whalers of the now-defunct World Hockey Association (WHA) and the Hartford Whalers of the NHL. He is the only player to have skated in the league over the course of five decades, with his playing career spanning from the 1940’s to the 1980’s, and won four Stanley Cups during his time in Detroit.
Gordie Howe is 86; he was recently the inaugural recipient of the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award, which the league presented to him in 2008. His jersey number, 9, has been retired by the Red Wings.
