John Scott is unapologetic about his suspension, as he calls Anaheim’s Tim Jackman ‘gutless’

In his first time speaking to the media since receiving his two-game suspension, San Jose Sharks enforcer John Scott didn’t have too much to be sorry for.

“I think it’s kind of gutless to go after [Vlasic] when you’re a tough guy”, said Scott in an interview transcribed by CSN’s Tim Kurtz. ” Obviously I don’t condone me going after Phil Kessel, but these are different situations.”

Scott was given a two-game suspension earlier this week, after choosing to leave the bench in order to tackle Anaheim Ducks‘ tough guy Tim Jackman with just minutes to go in the game. It was his second time going after the skater, the first being right before Jackman targeted Sharks alternate captain Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

The league has seen a decrease in the use of enforcers on the ice, but Scott is one of the few who has managed to remain floating around the NHL.

He knows what his job is on the ice, and that’s to stick up for his teammates. He even openly admits it to the media, talking about how he knows that he’s got a responsibility to drop the gloves with other league tough guys in defense of his teammates. He doesn’t seem to advocate big guys such as himself going after smaller players, though… which hasn’t always been the case for Scott.

The two-game suspension was not for the fight, but for opting to leave the bench with no intention of skating out and playing the game. The incident is shown in the video below:
