During the team’s game against the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday night, the center went down from a knee-on-knee hit made by Canadiens defenseman Jarred Tinordi. Tinordi was also the cause of a major hit on Washington Capitals‘ Nate Schmidt during the NHL preseason, when he was ejected from the Canadiens-Capitals game following his hit and a subsequent fight with Caps defenseman Chris Brown.
Stajan has been placed on the Flames’ injured reserve list, citing a knee injury, and the team has estimated that his return will come no sooner than six weeks from Tuesday.
There is no word from the league on whether Tinordi will receive disciplinary action for this particular hit, especially since it will be his second of the season. He was not suspended following his ejection during preseason, but it’s likely that the league will take a regular season hit more seriously.
Before going down, Matt Stajan, 30, had played in all eleven games for the Flames. The centerman has one goal and one assist so far this season.
