Former baseball star Jose Canseco may have his middle finger amputated, after a gun accident at his home where the slugger shot himself in the hand.

Jose Canseco may never have use of his left middle finger again and the digit may need to be amputated, after the former big league slugger accidentally shot himself in the hand earlier this week.

TMZ.com had the news.

According to Canseco’s  fiancée, Leila Knight, Jose Canseco was cleaning the gun — which he didn’t know was loaded — when it discharged in his hand.

Canseco underwent surgery in an attempt to save his finger.

"Leila tells us 50-year-old Canseco is in surgery right now as doctors desperately try to save what’s left of the finger. She says the bullet tore through the bottom part of the finger and doctors have already said he’ll never have full use of it again … even under the best of circumstances."

It seems very likely that his middle finger will need to be removed.

Ouch.

Let’s all just be glad that this wasn’t worse. While losing a finger is still a big deal and shooting yourself in the hand seems obviously painful, Canseco avoided a much bigger tragedy.
