London’s calling, but is the NFL ever going to listen long enough to put a franchise there?
Roger Goodell and Friends may have their ears perked up a bit more following a report from Deloitte shows that the United Kingdom would draw more than £102 million if the league put an expansion franchise in London by 2022. Considering that two games in the ‘International Series’ generated £32 million last season and could draw in the neighborhood of £58 million if — as expected — the series is expanded to four yearly treks to merry ol’ England by 2016, and suddenly, this has some traction.
News of this report comes a week after Chancellor George Osbourne announced he would make a concerted effort to bring an expansion team to London.
The British Broadcasting Company said that the NFL is reportedly looking into negotiations with the European Commission when it comes to exemption for more than just one team in the event London is granted an expansion franchise. The same report also indicated that Germany would be the top target if there is a second European city being added to the league.
Adding to the intrigue is that the Football Association is open to having the NFL as more than just an occasional fancy, as the English national team would be willing to play games across the country if Wimbley Stadium is in use.
This year’s ‘International Series’ will conclude next week when the Dallas Cowboys take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.
