The Houston Rockets kicked off the 2014-15
season on the right foot, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90 on the league’s opening night.
The Rockets led throughout the contest and put a damper on Kobe Bryant’s return for the Staples Center crowd. Bryant finished with 19 points on 6-17 shooting from the field and three rebounds.
As a whole, Los Angeles’ offense struggled. The Lakers shot 35.4 percent from the field and converted just three-pointers in the contest. Lakers coach Byron Scott has made clear he’s anti-three pointer and that principle was once again on display tonight.
On the other side, the Rockets had no problem scoring against a weak Lakers defense. Shooting guard James Harden paced the team with 32 points while center Dwight Howard had 13 points.
Howard and Bryant, former teammates, got into it during the game with Bryant calling Howard, “soft.”
Houston’s biggest free-agent acquisition, Trevor Ariza, had 16 points and three rebounds. However, the most important thing to come from Wednesday’s game was not the result, but Lakers rookie center Julius Randle breaking his leg in the fourth quarter.
Randle, the No. 7 pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, had two points prior to the injury.
It’s a terrible break for Randle, who was poised for a strong rookie campaign this year.
Both teams are on the road Wednesday, with Houston taking on the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles battling the Phoenix Suns.
