The best pitcher in the 2014 MLB playoffs has been Madison Bumgarner of the Giants, and it hasn’t been close. He is 4-0 in four starts and he has just added to his all-time great World Series resume with two victories over the Royals in the Fall Classic.
Having started Game 5 and thrown a complete game shutout, Bumgarner was still out in the bullpen on short rest for Game 7 on Wednesday night. The lefty was available to pitch as a reliever on what would have normally been his throwing day in between starts. Once his team took a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning of Game 7, manager Bruce Bochy called his number.
Available to throw 40-50 pitches for the Giants, Bumgarner would theorerically be able to go two or three innings, depending on his effectiveness and efficiency. He was greeted by boos from the Kansas City faithful, which might have been to rattle his cage or might have been out of genuine discouragement upon seeing him.
Bumgarner has a chance to take an even stronger hold of his place in history if he plays a role in a Game 7 win for the Giants on short rest. Stay tuned.
