Carolina Panthers quarterback showed his NBA neighbor some love Thursday by rocking a pair of Charlotte Hornets cleats for Thursday Night Football.

After making the playoffs last season and getting its old name back, the Charlotte Hornets are high on momentum coming into the NBA season.

Pair that with Kemba Walker’s game-winning shot and the buzz around Charlotte is exciting. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton showed some support for his North Carolina neighbors by rocking a pair of Hornets cleats before the Panthers Thursday Night Football game against the New Orleans Saints.

Those cleats are pretty sweet looking. The blue is close enough to the Panthers blue, too, that it doesn’t look weird. It’s great to have the Hornets back in the NBA. That’s a franchise that always had some of the best-looking merchandise.

The Charlotte-area sports scene has improved in recent years. The Hornets are, well, good. They signed Lance Stephenson and Al Jefferson is back-to-back off seasons. The Panthers, though struggling this season, have Newton and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Luke Kuechly along with a good defense and promising players like Kelvin Benjamin. Both teams are young, too. So there should be more good to come.

There is no more important position in sports than the quarterback. He represents not only the team, but can also represent a city. Newton is doing his part by leading the Panthers and repping the Hornets. It’s the kind of thing that means something to fans, and those fans have a lot to be excited about.
