New Orleans Saints‘ running back Mark Ingram will likely test NFL free agency in 2015

More from New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints’ running back Mark Ingram was selected with the 28th-overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The 2009 Heisman Trophy winner had big expectations after all of his success with the

Alabama Crimson Tide

but because of injuries and a lack of production, he quickly began to earn a the bust label.

He played well in spurts in 2013 but only carried the ball 78 times in 11 games (for 386 yards and one touchdown). Back in May, the Saints decided not to pick up Mark Ingram’s fifth-year option, which would have locked him up in the 2015 season.

Mark Ingram is having the best season of his career and is coming off the best game of his career. Although he has once again had to fight through injury issues, he rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in a huge 44-23 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. He has 331 yards and four touchdowns on just 58 carries, an average of 5.7 yards per carry.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com and the NFL Network, Mark Ingram is expected to hit free agent and may currently be auditioning for a job.

If Mark Ingram can stay healthy throughout the rest of the season, which is a tall task for him, he will likely benefit from not having his option picked up. He is still just 24 years old and appears to be realizing his talent.

In his career, he now ha 1,793 yards and 15 touchdowns on 414 carries (4.3 yards per carry).
