Following consecutive losses, the San Diego Chargers head down south to face a Miami Dolphins team in search of balance on the offensive side of the ball

San Diego Chargers vs. Miami Dolphins

At 4-3, the Miami Dolphins have yet to establish a level of offensive consistency, something they’ll have to find when the San Diego Chargers visit Sun Life Stadium in a game that could eventually impact the playoff fate of each team. Following a 5-1 start, the Chargers have dropped two straight as both QB Phillip Rivers and the San Diego defense look to snap their recent funk.

Keys to Victory

The defense that was the unsung hero during the Chargers’ five-game win streak must return, as they have allowed 28.6 points and 395 yards per game the last three weeks. Even with the recent success of rookie RB Branden Oliver, the ground game still ranks 30th, putting too much pressure on Rivers to throw like mad for San Diego to have a chance. Miami can run the ball (6th in the league), yet they have to find a more consistent passing game. That means QB Ryan Tannehill has to be more aggressive in getting the ball downfield to WRs Mike Wallace and Jarvis Landry.

Prediction

Hard to believe, but the Chargers haven’t won in Miami since the classic AFC Divisional Playoff game in 1982. One way to snap that skid is getting WR Keenan Allen out of his season-long funk, as the Dolphins won’t respect San Diego’s ground game and will look lock down TE Antonio Gates. Miami has had some success in running the read option, but how well its third-ranked pass defense does in containing Rivers will be the decisive factor.
