The WWE announced their WWE Network early in 2014 and it was met with a lot of positive reaction. For just $9.99 you got an elaborate online database of WWE events and other videos to stream when ever you wanted.
It also included the monthly WWE pay-per-views, which made signing up for the WWE Network a no-brainer. Instead of paying $60 a month for the pay-per-view, you could get that and more for $9.99 a month with a WWE Network subscription.
Still, the WWE Network has struggled to reach their goal of a million subscribers a month. That has led WWE chairman Vince McMahon to think outside the box.
First, they’re dropping the six-month commitment to sign up. You didn’t have to pay the six-months up front, but had to pay the $9.99 for six months, not really a big deal but nice that they’ve eliminated that for those that were turned off by it.
This is the real big bombshell, McMahon and the WWE are giving new subscribers or potential subscribers the month of November for free. That kind of rubs someone like myself who has subscribed for months the wrong way, because I’m not eligible and the WWE will take my $9.99.
Still, I love the WWE Network and I love getting the pay-per-views on a quality stream for $10 a month and I likely wouldn’t pay $60 a month for pay-per-views and would be more selective with which ones I watch. So in that sense, I want the WWE Network to thrive and survive and if this is what is needed I’ll overlook that slight.
It really is brilliant, because as a WWE fan who drifted away post-adolescence and high school, the WWE Network (along with an annual trip with friends to WrestleMania) has brought me back into wrestling.
And if you don’t believe Vince McMahon would give away a free pay-per-view event, yes the free month of WWE Network for November includes Survivor Series, watch the man himself announce it below.
