Decker, Jets Need to Focus on Themselves, Not Fans

In the latest chapter of ā€œJets doing stupid thingsā€ we look at Eric Decker’s tweet gone wrong.

Before we begin let’s keep in mind that the New York Jets are 1-7 with their only win of the season coming against the Oakland Raiders, who are winless.Ā  Therefore, in a way, the Jets themselves are really that close to winless themselves.

Say what you want about Oakland being 0-7, the Jets are neck-and-neck with the Raiders as the worse team in the NFL.

So with the Jets riding a 1-7 record following a six-turnover, 43-23 loss against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday that saw franchise quarterback Geno Smith get benched after he tossed three interceptions in the first quarter, what does one of the Jets do?

Try to rally an already pissed-off fan base.

In what was originally a harmless tweet on Wednesday to hype up the Jets fan base (or what’s left of it), new Jets $36 million wide receiver Eric Decker innocently sparked a Twitter war that ended with his wife, country music singer Jessie James Decker firing back and deactivating her Twitter account.

All Decker did was ask Jets fans why they love the Jets and that he would reward his favorite answer with a signed gift. Hilarity ensued.

Decker, as expected from the Jets fan base, was blasted on Twitter, which in turn angered his wife, who tweeted:

ā€œYou think he really cares what y’all think haters?Ā  He’s laughing his ass alllll the way home … Life is pretty good here, can’t complain.ā€

She removed her Twitter a few hours after that tweet.

ā€œYou’ve got to expect that,ā€ Decker told reporters.Ā  ā€œObviously, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I don’t think it’s against the law to try to unite or reach out to fans.Ā  When you’re in the position you are, people obviously enjoy winning a lot more than losing – I get that – but they still love the team aspect.ā€

ā€œObviously I wish things could be different.ā€

Hey Deckers: Welcome to New York.

We can point to the many, many things wrong with this.Ā  The fact that the Jets are 1-7, the fact that Decker only has 31 catches for just 363 yards with three touchdowns on the season, the fact that the Jets are on pace to break the record for the worst turnover margin in league history (minus-30), the fact that the Jets have lost seven in a row, and the fact that the new quarterback that was supposed to replace their last bad quarterback is a horrible quarterback himself.

The Jets have benched what’s supposed to be their franchise quarterback in Geno Smith for Michael Vick for their upcoming game against Kansas City on Sunday.Ā  Vick had four fumbles in relief last week against the Bills (lost two) and doesn’t face an easy matchup in his first start of the season as he’ll go up against his old head coach in Andy Reid.

The Jets defense has been horrible this season, especially in the passing game.Ā  Injuries and bad personnel decisions have played a role with the struggling secondary, however the Jets have been plain lousy defending the pass, giving up nine pass plays for 40-plus yards and a league-high 12 touchdowns on third down.Ā  They also only have three takeaways all season – one pick and two fumble recoveries.

Remember when Charles Woodson said the Raiders ā€œsuckā€ after their home opening loss to Houston?Ā  The Jets ā€œsuckā€ just as much.

Eric Decker should’ve tweeted this instead:

ā€œ#jetsnation, tell me why you put up with the @nyjets nonsense using #pissedoffjetsfan and I’ll apologize.ā€

That may have actually gotten a better response.
