Greg Hardy’s trial for domestic violence has been postponed until after the 2014 NFL season, which prompted him to request reinstatement into the league.

Greg Hardy won’t face a jury trial for his domestic violence charges until after the 2014 NFL season, which could put his hopes for playing this season in jeopardy. However, Hardy will still appeal for reinstatement on the grounds that he hasn’t been found guilty of anything yet and he won’t until the offseason.

The Carolina Panthers had placed Greg Hardy on the NFL’s exempt list, which amounts to a leave of absence with pay, after facing intense scrutiny for allowing him to play Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while still awaiting trial for domestic violence charges. Hardy had not played since as he prepared for trial in November. Now that the trial has been postponed, Hardy won’t be able to state his defense, which could likely mean he’s out of the NFL for the season.

Of course, with the franchise tag currently applied to him and Hardy set to be an unrestricted free agent in the spring, the Pro Bowl defensive end has every reason to want to play and prove his value to potential suitors, who are likely wary of Hardy at this point.

Given the NFL’s revamped stance on domestic violence, it’s hard to believe the league will allow Hardy to return to the field before he is exonerated. If Hardy is found guilty, he faces a six week suspension as a first time offender. Repeat offenders are now banned for life, per the new domestic violence policy.
