Dallas Cowboys make the decision to sign defensive lineman Josh Brent to a contract extension to help with position depth.

For the Dallas Cowboys, depth on the defensive front has long been an issue due to injury. In an offseason that saw future Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware head to the Denver Broncos and defensive end Jason Hatcher accept an offer to play for the rival Redskins, not much was done in the off season to address it. The Cowboys would still enter the year wondering who would be their next big pass rusher and looking for more helmets on the defensive line depth chart.

That’s not to say nothing was done. They made the move in the NFL Draft to acquire defensive end Demarcus Lawrence who is slated to return this Sunday versus the Arizona Cardinals. The front office also brought in players like lineman Henry Melton signing them to “play and prove it” contracts. Pass rushing specialist (pre-injury) Anthony Spencer has returned and is getting better week to week. He also just recently participated in his first full week of practice in ages.

That brings us to Josh Brent. Arrested in 2013 for an intoxication manslaughter charge that also involved the death of Cowboys’ teammate Jerry Brown, Brent was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation. He recently petitioned the NFL to return and was advised he could after a 10 game suspension. Eager to deepen this defensive line and add rushers, the Cowboys have signed Brent to a one-year contract extension through 2015 per NFL.com.

He’s eligible to hit the field again on November 23rd against the divisional rival New York Giants. And if what he’s showing in practice is any indication, he’ll be a welcome addition to a Dallas team thirsty for quarterback sacks.
