Greg Robinson was drafted in May as the left tackle of the future for the St. Louis Rams.
On Sunday when the Rams visit the San Francisco 49ers, the future will arrive.
Robinson was taken second overall by the Rams this spring out of Auburn and moved into the starting lineup in Week 6, but at left guard.
However, when left tackle Jake Long went down with a season-ending knee injury last week, Robinson made the move to left tackle.
It’s not how he wanted to win the job.
"“Well, I hurt for Jake,” Robinson told the Associated Press. “Really it’s something that I have to do because the coaches asked me to move there. But for the most part I told him I love him and this and hopefully that he can help me out and be a set of eyes for me and Coach Bou (Paul Boudreau) asked him also, but really the most important thing is just try my best to learn as much as possible from those guys around me and I feel I have been.”"
Coach Jeff Fisher thinks the rookie is ready.
"“He’s done fine. He understands what we’re doing. He’s had a revolving door there next to him at guard but that will settle down. … We’ve got all the confidence in the world in Greg. He’s just going to continue to get better and better.”"
Robinson said he was rusty against the Kansas City Chiefs last week after Long got hurt, but a full week of practice has helped.
"“That’s what this week of practice is for, just to build up and get used to it again, but it won’t take long. The guys are a little faster. I feel like I’ve seen that this past week when we played K.C. I just was fighting and trying not to give up any sacks, because I knew I was going to be a little rusty. I didn’t have any reps at tackle.”"
The Rams are 2-5, having lost starting quarterback Sam Bradford to a season-ending knee injury during the preseason and losing veteran backup Shaun Hill to an injury on the season opener.
But Austin Davis has taken over the job full-time (at least this year) and has 10 touchdowns and five interceptions, throwing for 1,680 yards and completing 65.2 percent of his attempts.
