The huddle of players after the kickoff was fielded confused Missouri State’s kickoff coverage team and Aaron Killebrew, who got the ball from Dimitri Taylor as the players were converged, made one member of the Bears’ coverage team miss, returning the ball 32 yards to the Missouri State 38.
Two quick completions got the ball to the Bears’ 20 and from there, Eric Heidorn booted a 38-yard field goal with six seconds left to lift Indiana State to a 20-18 victory.
Indiana State is now 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, while Missouri State fell to 4-5 and 1-4.
Taylor, who fielded the fateful kickoff, also had a 1-yard touchdown run for Indiana State, which led 14-6 before Missouri State battled back to take the lead twice in the fourth quarter.
