Toronto Maple Leafs alternate captain Joffrey Lupul is out indefinitely with broken bone in hand

The Toronto Maple Leafs are not the worst team in the NHL, but they’re far from being able to afford a significant injury.

The franchise will have little choice, though, but to make do without alternate captain Joffrey Lupul for the near future. The veteran forward fell on his hand during practice on Thursday when he tripped over a stick, and the fall apparently significantly broke a bone in his right hand.

The team was unaware that the injury was significant until an examination after the practice had ended; Lupul continued to skate for the remainder of practice and had hoped to play with the team during Friday night’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Lupul seems a little shell-shocked by the incident, and no one can blame him.

The Maple Leafs are currently seventh in the Atlantic Division, tied with nine points with the Florida Panthers. This is a mountain above the Carolina Hurricanes, who are struggling to notch even a third point this season, but it isn’t a position where they are necessarily comfortable losing a normal star forward.

The team has announced that Carter Ashton, who has been healthy scratched for the first nine games of the season, has been activated for the time being.
