The Dallas Cowboys host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and likely won’t know the status of quarterback Tony Romo’s back injury until game time.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has two fractured bones in his back, but may still play Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals visit Arlington, Texas.

Romo sustained two fractured transverse processes in Monday night’s loss to the Washington Redskins, but multiple sources have told ESPN.com that Romo could still play on Sunday.

The injury is similar to one sustained by Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty earlier this season. Petty missed one game.

According to the report, Romo will either start or will be inactive. He has not practiced this week and was questionable on Friday’s injury report.

The Cowboys and Romo have insisted this is not related to the surgery Romo had on his back in December and his status for the remainder of the season is not in jeopardy.

The transverse process is a small bone that protrudes from either side of the vertebrae. Romo was hurt when he was hit by the knee of Redskins linebacker Keenan Robinson on a sack in the third quarter of Monday’s game.

If Romo can’t go, Brandon Weeden would make his first start for Dallas and his first since last Dec. 1, when he was with the Cleveland Browns. Rookie Dustin Vaughan from West Texas A&M would back up Weeden if Romo is inactive.

According to Scott & White Healthcare, a fractured transverse process most often occurs in falls and motor vehicle accidents.
