Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks finally flipped the Stanford Cardinal off with an emphatic 45-16 rout at Autzen Stadium on Saturday night, putting the nation’s fifth-ranked team in position to seize more than just a possible Pac-12 title.

Having had their BCS title hopes dashed by Stanford the past two seasons, Oregon vented its past frustration behind the play of Mariota, who accounted for 343 yards and four touchdowns. The Oregon Ducks jumped out to a 24-6 second quarter lead and were never seriously threatened.

Mariota threw for 257 yards and a pair of scores, while also gashing the overmatched Stanford defense for 86 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground.

Stanford could get no closer than 24-16 late in the third quarter, but Mariota and the Ducks closed out any prospects for a third straight Cardinal win. Thomas Tyner’s 21-yard touchdown run was followed up by Mariota’s 7-yard run and his 25-yard scoring strike to Darren Carrington that made the game into a full blown rout.

The Cardinal offense put up 424 yards, yet were unable to break the Oregon Ducks’ defense, which forced them to settle for three Jordan Williamson field goals and a 1-yard touchdown run from Patrick Skov.

Oregon still has a date against 17th-ranked Utah next week, with Colorado preceding the annual Civil War against Oregon State as barriers to playing for the Pac-12 title.
