The 7th ranked Texas Christian Horned Frogs traveled to face the 20th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers for a Big 12 showdown in a key game on the NCAA schedule.

A college football team can only turn the ball over so many times and still get away with it, right? That should be doubly true when that team’s opponent is ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Somehow, the West Virginia Mountaineers turned the ball over five times and still had a lead until the final moments of this game. In the end, however, the Texas Christian Horned Frogs came back and won by a final score of 31-30.

For so much of this game, it seemed like the story was sloppy offense and nasty weather. Neither offense was sharp in a game that was expected to be a shootout.

Clint Trickett and the West Virginia offense just kept coughing the ball up, yet they kept getting bailed out because Trevone Boykin and the TCU offense just couldn’t get things going. TCU turned the ball over twice themselves, including one play that resulted in a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

On the offensive side of things for Texas Christian, the contributions of running back B.J. Catalon should not be overlooked. When nothing else was working, Catalon was able to move the ball on the ground. In total he ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns in this game.

All told, this was probably one of the uglier victories for the Texas Christian Horned Frogs this season. They were down nine points in the fourth quarter, played ugly for much of the game, and still found a way. They won a game on the road despite a poor showing from their star quarterback.

As for West Virginia, they will be left asking what could have been. Even with five turnovers, they had a number of chances to step on TCU’s throat. They got conservative, which was perhaps the right call because Trickett and the offense were so turnover-prone.

The Mountaineers kept letting the Horned Frogs hang around, and ultimately lost a heart-breaker on a field goal as time expired.

Texas Christian is now 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Big 12. West Virginia is now 6-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Big 12.
