Jacob Markstrom, prospect for the Vancouver Canucks, finally ends three-game shutout streak

At the trade deadline in 2014, the Vancouver Canucks acquired Markstrom from the Florida Panthers as a part of the blockbuster deal that brought Roberto Luongo back to Florida. When the team decided not to keep 3 goaltenders at the NHL level, they reassigned Markstrom to the AHL Utica Comets- where he came within minutes of breaking the previous shutout record for the minor league.

According to NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, “He was closing in on the league’s shutout record, held by former Abbotsford Heat goalie Barry Brust, who set the new standard at 268 minutes and 17 seconds.”.

The streak was broken on Friday night when the Binghamton Senators pulled out an early 1-0 lead over the Comets.

The Swedish netminder was drafted 31st overall in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers. He played in only a handful of games with the NHL franchise before getting moved to Vancouver, but holds a semi-respectable .896 SV% for those games as a prospect. The 24-year old will remain with the Utica Comets so long as both Ryan Miller and backup Eddie Lack perform well for the Canucks; a shaky start to the season by Miller could have the franchise looking to Markstrom for assistance, though, should the occasion arise.
