The moment the World Series ended this week, Alex Rodriguez had officially served the end of his 162 game suspension from Major League Baseball. He will be reinstated for the 2015 season, leaving the New York Yankees with a messy situation to deal with.
Among the other problems surrounding Rodriguez, the 39-year-old is coming back from a hip operation. One imagines that he will not exactly be moving well when it comes to running and fielding, but that has not persuaded Rodriguez to consider a modified role with the Yankees.
Alex Rodriguez was a third baseman before, and he plans to be a third baseman again. According to Nick Cafardo:
"A-Rod was reinstated after the World Series, ending his 162-game suspension. He wants to come back and play third base as often as possible, according to a source close to him. Yankees GM Brian Cashman said a few weeks ago that Rodriguez may also play some first base and DH next season. His hip has likely gotten stronger with a year off."
His hip is stronger, sure, but it’s all relative. There was a time when Rodriguez was an elite fielder, but those days have long since passed. The more the Yankees can get away with using Rodriguez as a part-time player or a designated hitter, the better.
It’s going to be a dicey and potentially ugly situation for the Yankees as Rodriguez returns. As this report shows us, Rodriguez’s ego is not going to make things any easier.
