Just minutes before the Ducks were to take the ice against the Colorado Avalanche Sunday night, the team’s starting netminder- John Gibson- went down with a pre-game skate injury.
Okay.
The team will start backup-backup netminder Jason LaBarbera in net for his first start with the Ducks franchise, and will be stuck without a backup for him. Frederik Andersen, the team’s other netminder, did not dress for the game.
Gibson, who wowed Ducks fans during the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring by recording a shutout in his first playoff appearance, has been off to a bit of a rough start this season. The 21-year-old netminder has been reassigned to the team’s AHL affiliate for conditioning and net practice at least once so far during the month of October, so LaBarbera has been floating between the AHL and the big leagues all season.
A few seasons ago, when the Arizona Coyotes played without a backup, fourth line forward Paul Bissonnette offered to step in if needed. Is anyone on the Ducks offering the same thing?
The team is heading into the game strong, sitting in first in the Pacific Division with a 9-3-0 record.
